The Guidepost
To my friend with schizophrenia The silence haunts me. I think about your meaning more than if words had been spoken. I deceive myself into believing I am part of your world. That somehow I’m a guidepost on your way to reality. But when the fog creeps in I, too, am obscured. When it lifts you have to find your bearings all over again. I will not give up. The memory of shared laughter must stir you into seeking it again. I offer my smile to remind you of how laughter begins. |
Hide and Seek
To my friend with schizophrenia You stepped out of the shadows and into my life. I haven’t the strength to hold you here and you haven’t the strength to stay. So we continue playing hide and seek. I cannot go across the line but when you stand on the border I can reach you and pull you back to me. I wonder whether you are happier when I catch you or when I don’t. |
